Russian publisher refuses to withdraw Stalin notebook from schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heathenhistory.co.uk\/russia\/files\/2012\/04\/Moscow-pupils-take-a-brea-0092.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-622\" src=\"http:\/\/heathenhistory.co.uk\/russia\/files\/2012\/04\/Moscow-pupils-take-a-brea-0092-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Following on from the previous post on Putin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2012\/apr\/03\/russian-publisher-stalin-notebook-schools?newsfeed=true\">this<\/a>\u00a0article from today&#8217;s Guardian introduced me to a new term &#8211; re-Stalinisation.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute focuses on a new school text book which names Stalin as one of twenty Great Russians. \u00a0Miriam Elder suggests &#8220;<em>Liberal figures have been fighting against creeping &#8220;re-Stalinisation&#8221; in Russia. Three years ago, a refurbished Moscow metro station was opened featuring a large quote from the dictator. Last summer, members of the Communist party unveiled a bust of Stalin in the central Russian city of Penza.&#8221; <\/em>In a similar vain, Orlando Figes claims <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2009\/mar\/03\/orlando-figes-stalin-book?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487\">here<\/a>\u00a0that &#8220;<em>his Russian publisher had cancelled a contract to publish his latest book on life under Stalin, saying it had apparently dumped the project because of political pressure&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first story\u00a0presses lots of buttons for me. Beyond drift to reaction point I made in the earlier post, it also raises the question of what school History should be for.<\/p>\n<p>One final thought &#8211; the book also includes Ivan the Terrible. Stalin greatly admired Tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich, but claimed he made one mistake &#8211; at the end of his life he repented\u00a0his brutality.
