Exam Technique Top Tips

  In general:

  • You MUST refer to the question – AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!
  • EXPLAIN your ideas
  • EVALUATE THE IMPORTANCE OF FACTORS IN RELATION TO EACH OTHER throughout the essay not just in the conclusion
  • LINK FACTORS – don’t simply list these to show you know where they are – EXPLAIN HOW they impact upon the question and what they show about the importance of the factors.
  • USE CRUCHY DETAILS TO SUPPORT YOUR POINTS – DO NOT MAKE SWEEPING GENERALISATIONS

 Introductions:

  • Define any important words in the question – e.g. what do we mean by effective?
  • SUGGEST your line of argument
  • You could refer to any historical debate surrounding the topic – e.g. for KQ3 and KQ6
  • DO NOT simply restate the question

  Conclusions:

  • A good conclusion could be the difference between an A and a B grade
  • Must be ARGUMENT centred – you must make a judgement and substantiate this
  • YOU SHOULD NOT sit on the fence
